Almost everything that is man-made has been mined from the soil. Aluminum, Iron, Silicon, Copper, Magnesium, uranium, and most other elements can be found in the soil. The first step to self-replication is to obtain the materials to replicate.

Throughout the thousands of years that mankind has been mining, most of mining was accomplished using picks and shovels. Then within the last two hundred years, heavy equipment was created to increase output of mines and make them more profitable. With todays technology, such as GPS and computers, it is possible to build a robot to excavate the soil. The necessary robots to accomplish the task of mining are listed below.
